  • What Portland Has to Offer

While the rare sunny days here in Oregon come and go, us Portlanders have to take advantage of it anyway we can. Being outside and exercising is one great way we can do this. Portland is one of the greatest and most beautiful cities. However, I know I am guilty of not taking full advantage of it what the city has to offer.

In Portland we have woods, rivers, beaches, trails, and roads to explore. According to travelportland.com, Hoyt Arboretum, in Washington Park, has over 12 miles of trails you can walk, and that’s only one part of Washington Park! Portland isn’t home to only one, but many different parks with hundreds of miles of trails and unforgettable scenery.

If you aren’t trail runner than the paved waterfront loop is for you. The waterfront loop is around 3 miles long and has multiple entries between the Steele and Hawthorne bridges. Now we know that it isn’t always sunny outside and dressing for the occasion is vital to surviving the chilly Portland weather. Jackets, long sleeve thermal shirts, and a nice pair of waterproof running shoes are all a must.

We have waterproof shoes that aren’t only nice feeling but nice looking too. After serving the greater Portland area for more than 30 years, we know by experience how important it is to have these essential waterproof pieces of clothing.

Portland is a great city with beautiful features. Unless we get outside we won’t ever see them. Travelportland.com has multiple hikes, and trails to feed your venturous side. So get outside and see what Portland has to offer.

  • Shake Your Tail Feathers

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, you may be hoping (maybe even looking) for something a little different to do this year. Well, you’re in luck! Here are our top 5 things to do in Portland on Thanksgiving Day that will be sure to put a pep in your step.

    1.  Come shake your tail feathers at the annual Turkey Trot at the Zoo on Thanksgiving Day.  The 4-mile run/walk, which winds through Washington Park and the Zoo, is a creative way to start your morning with the family.  Afterward, gobble-gobble up a snack at the Cascade Grill located within the Zoo and experience exotic exhibits, such as the Red Ape Reserve and Penguinarium, on our nation's most traditional holiday.  Costumes encouraged!

    2.  Opt for a feel-good morning dance workout at Conduit so you can enjoy the stuffing instead of feeling stuffed after Thanksgiving dinner.  The two-hour dance event encourages participants to forget all that jazz that gets their feathers in a ruffle and rather celebrate their good fortune by moving and grooving to the beat of the ‘drumstick’ on the dance floor.

    3.  Give thanks for all that you have at PROPER's 13th Annual Free Thanksgiving Dinner at Celebration Tabernacle.  PROPER, a North Portland community enhancement organization, provides not only a cornucopia tasty food, including vegetarian options, but also serves up a platter of delicious multicultural music and storytelling for the whole community.  This event is also a great opportunity to give thanks by giving back to the community and volunteering!

    4. Instead of sitting around the dinner table telling yawn-inducing "When I was your age..." stories to your children, transport them back in time by treating them to a Turkey Day TV Dinner at The Original Dinerant this Thanksgiving.  At this 1950s and 60s inspired diner, feast on roasted turkey in a tray, with mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, caramelized brussel sprouts, and more.  Fill up after on freshly baked apple pie while watching the football game on one of the many TVs and your children will be giving lots of thanks for the retro adventure!

    5.  Get in the holiday spirit with a Thanksgiving dinner buffet cruising down the Willamette River on the Portland Spirit!  While this may not be the Mayflower, it will certainly be a memorable experience for the whole family in that it puts a new twist on the typical holiday tradition of eating at home.  Sit back, relax, and enjoy the view as fall slips slowly into winter.

  • Happy Feet

How many people can honestly say they have put 150 tons of pressure on their feet? Well according to Northwest Foot Clinic they will tell you anyone 150 pounds or heavier that has ran for three miles has put that kind of pressure on their feet. Your feet are very important and deserve the best kind of treatment and comfort.

Most people overlook how important their feet are and how much strain is put on them throughout the day. Even in the rain, Oregon is one of the prettiest states, however you can’t see the beauty unless you’re outside. If you have back, or neck pain it could all start with your feet. Your feet are your base and need to be taken care of properly and it all starts with the shoes that you’re wearing.

Here at Jays Wide Shoes we know how important feet are and the care they deserve. We have a wonderful selection of comfortable, athletic and therapeutic shoes for all ages, male or female. With Oregon’s weather being as amazing as it is I am sure everyone wants to be outside (wink, wink). Don’t overlook your feet and get some cheap shoes that “fit”. We are fairly priced and conveniently located. Come into one of our stores or shop online if you don’t necessarily have the time. You can always call us too with questions about what might fit best for you and those wonderful feet of yours.

Now we may not have doctors at our locations but we do have people who know shoes and feet! Running, hiking, walking, working, stretching, jumping… etc. all fit into the categories of shoes we carry in stock every day.

  • Dressing for Fall Fashion

Seasonal fashion is showing a very suggestive and stylish filled Fall season, this includes and suggestions to styles in your shoes and versatile options available from your closet!

When it comes to the correct shoe choice, Suede loafers seam to be the choice in men’s fall fashion. “They’re more stylish the regular leather loafers, and they can easily go from office to weekend. Old Friend is a great brand. For variety check out the latest selection on our site!

As far as the ladies, Driving Shoes and Moccasins are back this season! “Wear these in place of ballet flats. Whether you decide for a more neutral or light tone, or even bright they’re perfect for fall because not only and they comfortable, versatile, and warm. They also make the best style with sturdy soles for those rough weather patterns in the Pacific Northwest. We recommend checking out Halfinger’s Haley Collection, or Dansko’s Kaya Chocolate, they are close to a style you want in Moccasins with a sleeker design.
